The last day of conference

I found a few very good presentations today. And I was a bit calmer than yesterday which made the esence of the jobs more clear to me.

I try no think about A and M. I am just counting the hours and trying to do some thing in each hour. Honestly I am very busy, I am attending to some of my work jobs which are a lot. So back to work for now.

New sandals

I bought myself a new pair of sandals with tiny heels. They are pretty practical, I can enjoy wearing them. There is nothing on the back to rub on the bruises, so hopefully my feet will get well soon. I have only two more band aids left in my purse. I always carry them with me, just in case. I might go shopping again tomorrow.

I just found that there are flamingos in the small lake in front of the hotel. They are pretty. I wish Arman was here to see them. He knows flamingo from the F page in the ABC game that he loves.

There is a colleague I met today, his name is Brian. We went to the mall together and he showed me the flamingos on our way out. Turns out that there are not only new shoes that lead you shopping while you are away from home, but sometimes you forget to bring your belt with you for example! It was nice having company going to the city, especially since I didn't know the streets and it was dark. I really don't like driving new places in the dark. To my credit though, I drove from Palm Spring airport to Palm Desert last night at 11:30 pm all by my own. Not a very fun drive, I should admit.

Brian was not shocked knowing that I was originally from Iran but to my surprise he thought I was funny. I never considered myself funny though, that was an interesting comment. But here is a funny story, may be the joke of the year as M put it:

I am back from the mall and it is around 9:40 pm, I had left my room a few minutes past 8 pm. I am in front of my hotel room and I remember exactly that I had turned off all the lights before I left. I insert the key, the light on the lock turns green. I step in the room and, well, there is a light in the room! I find my way forward past the bathroom door and the closet and there it is, the light by my bed is on! Then I see two bottles of water on my night stand! I am stunned! Then I realise that the blanket on my bed is flipped to the side and the remote is on the blanket! Now I am scared. And to add to the fishy situation, the TV closet is wide open! I am certain some one is/has been in my room trying to watch TV and sipping water. I look at the phone to call the receptionist, but what if the suspect is behind the curtain? The cordless phone is on a table by the window, so forget it. I just run out of my room, my sandals still in my hands, a bit angry and a lot scared. On my way to the elevator I look back several times to make sure no one is following me. I am in front of the reception desk waiting for some one to attend to this problem of mine. The lady behind the desk calls me. I am in front of her trying not to shiver. I tell her right on the spot that "I left my room two hours ago and now I found that there has been some one in my room!". -"Some one is in your room?" -"I don't know, I didn't look for any one, but some one has been there!" -"Are you sharing the room with any one?" (what a stupid questions) "No!" -"Is any thing missing?" -"I don't know, I did not check, I just ran out when I realized that my bed has been touched and there were two bottles of water on my bed side and the TV cabinet was wide open." -"That is the evening room service ma'am." "aah! really?!?#@" God! I am both relieved and embarrassed, but it is a nice laughter afterwards.

The amazed lady

It is really amusing for me when I tell some one about my background and when I find them, well, surprised, to tell the least. Here is the story:

We were sitting at the table and there was this middle aged lady with Chinese background sitting beside me. Every one was talking here and there and then this question of which school we had graduated from was raised. The answer on my side of the table left this lady stunned. She told us that she had done her undergrad in Beijing and later her PhD in England where she had met many Iranians at school all of whom were men and married and their wives were "just wives", as she phrased it. She added that she had come to this conclusion that all Iranian ladies had been "just wives" with no education. From the Iranian people she had met in England she had also concluded that we were people with dark skin since none of those she had met "had fair skins as I had"! And for those who have not met me, I am no snow white! I tried to explain to this Dr that I was one among many Iranian women not only being educated but being accepted in many reputable universities across the globe, and I was no body among those. I added that there were many different climates in Iran and so were many different skin colors, from fairly fair to olive shades...

This kind of cultural conversation is among the reasons I like participating in conferences.

New shoes

I am in my room, a brief scape from the conference. Every thing is fine about the conference and the hotel. I am in Dessert Spring Resort in the town of Palm Desert, CA. The hotel looks nice, had not much time to explore it yet. The conference is good, have met a couple of nice people. BUT:

My dear M and A are not with me which takes all the glow from all the pretty stuff.

And I made this terrible mistake of buying a new pair of shoes and bringing them with me as my dressy shoes. Turns out the beautiful curve at the back is too stiff. Both my feet are bruised and bleeding now. I am going to put on my sneakers with my formal dress now. I just might swallow any funny look at my shoes. Or no body might even pay attention to them, right?

I have to run down. There is another talk I like to participate in. Oh, and BTW, I got the most surprising look from an attendee about my Iranian background, being educated there as a woman, and being here. Will tell you more about that later.

Second Day at work

It was hard to find myself among all the thoughts for the few couple of hours yesterday: I had missed Arman badly, I had missed Mehrdad on the top of that; I was not sure how not working for more than a year had affected my performance; It was hard to see myself alone again.

I was all by my own, no baby, no stroller, no one to ask about the sound of the ducks which were bathing at the pond where I was walking towards the main building with my supervisor.

I was introduced to a million people on the fist hour, seventy percent of which were important ones to remember. Every one seemed very talented and usually kind.

Finally I was introduced to my table. My name was already installed on the outside of my cubicle and I had two forms on my desk describing usage of the phone and voicemail and my personal information at work: mailing address, login and password, extension, ... . It was really welcoming.

I had lunch with my supervisor, so imagine my free time to relax!

But as the sun was finding its way towards west, I was finding myself as an individual again, a talented one, a person who does not fear not knowing things, and a person who gets fascinated with medical devices. It was a nice time in the afternoon and I was not afraid staying at work, only I had missed my family, my loves. So I headed home.

Today every thing was even better. Specially since I found Arman very happy and energetic last night. We spent about two hours together but then he was tired and he wanted to sleep. This morning I had missed him even more than yesterday when I was leaving home. I can count on the weekend though to be with him all the time.
